IT ResumeWriting a resume can be a huge undertaking to the person who desperately needs a job. In today's economy, there are hundreds of applicants for just one IT position. But, how does a person make their IT resume stand out amongst the vast amount of other resumes? Here are some great tips on how to write an IT resume and get an interview.

1. What to check

One of the first and foremost things to check on a resume is the spelling and grammar. If a person cannot spell and does not have proper grammar, it can be a big, red flag to potential employers. While landing an interview is the goal, it won't happen with a resume that is less than adequate. While the IT resume template and all of the other elements are important, the most important aspect is the spelling and grammar.

Another area that employees are sure to look for is a resume that lacks sufficient experience. In the IT field, it is all about what you know. Remember, employers are going to be asking for a person to work on their computer system, inadequately trained people will not be considered. A student that is fresh out of college needs to put down any work, even volunteering. This shows the prospective employer that there have been some hands on work done in this field, even if it is only on a volunteer basis. Sometimes schooling is not enough, there needs to be on the job experience.

2. The Resume Format

The format is very important. The resume must be aesthetically appealing. While it may be impressive to have 4-5 pages of information, a prospective employer doesn't have time for all that. The standard format should be one page for the resume and a second page for references. If it is more than a page in length, chances are they will lose interest. The key is to put just enough information without being flashy. Too much information may backfire and appear that there have been many jobs or that there are too many irons in the fire. Having a good blend of just enough information will surely appeal.

One of the biggest issues with a resume is people forget to put their contact information down. Unless the resume is sent through email, how can an employer know how to reach this person? While this may sound a bit crazy, it happens all the time. While constructing the body of the resume, make sure all contact information, including email and phone is conveniently listed.

3. Resume Objective Statement

Some people say not to put a career objective on the resume, but after reading many employers requirements, it is a good thing to add. When an employer looks at the resume, they may have questions and wonder what is next for this person. This can especially be true if a person has had many jobs or an inactive employment period. Let them know up front what kind of position will work. Is the IT field something that is going to be a long term career path, let them know? Remember, there are piles of other applicants and anything that makes a resume stand out gives a better chance of an interview.

4. And don’t forget...

Lastly, when packaging the resume and references to send for a job posting, don't forget the cover letter. The cover letter gives a chance to be personal. Rather than all the unpleasantness of a resume, the cover letter is a chance to explain and show some personality. It never hurts to introduce oneself and share a little about who they are. It could be the one thing that causes an application to get pulled for an interview.
